My great-great-great grandmother, Maria Bjorkman, had several claims to fame. First, she was a published author – winning awards at several World’s Fairs (according to the article below). Second, she and her husband Hampus were quite well known in Sweden and celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary.
Below is a link to one of Maria’s publications, a small bound book written in Swedish called Sagor ur Skogen (Tales From The Forest), a fairytale. It’s 85 pages and was written in 1860 when she was 31 years old. It should load in PDF form but may take a few minutes due to its size. I purchased this book in digital form from the Swedish National Library. My grandma owns a small paper version of the book which sparked my investigation. The bound copy is very fragile so at least we now have a digital copy that should last generations. We’re looking for someone to translate the book from Swedish to English!
A google search turns up the book on Amazon http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sagor-skogen-Marie-B/dp/B000WF2L3C, though it’s currently unavailable (another publication run is doubtful 😉
The Bjorkman’s 70th anniversary was celebrated on October 11, 1923. She was 95 and he was 94. The article below published in the Lincoln Star (Nebraska) notes that the couple received many congratulations, including a silver platter and letter from the King and Queen of Sweden. The photo accompanying the article also hangs in my parents’ home and, you can’t tell from the poor quality, but in the photo, the couple is seated next to the platter and letter they received from the royal family.
Maria was born a Liedholm. Apparently her family were statesmen though I haven’t confirmed that fact. It was the history of her family and the family of her husband which drew attention from the royal family. I would love to know more.
Hampus was born into a military family, himself having run a sharpshooter corps in Sweden for 40 years. The article states that Hampus’s father was captain during several wars. Who knows what wars those would have been. Something else to investigate!
Maria died April 6, 1925 and Hampus died May 16, 1927.
